![]() In the beginning, Livy’s actions are over the top and stalkerish. But the relationship is problematic from start to finish. ![]() I certainly haven’t read a romance that’s played out like this one, and I definitely wanted to dig deeper and get to know Wylder better. There’s a whole lot of good stuff going on here, from the mysterious and intriguing storyline to the compelling hero. As the two navigate the changes to their relationship, Livy continues to struggle with accepting this complicated man into her life. He’s still largely silent and guards his secrets, but there’s a softer side to him that is worth the trouble. After a series of run-ins and non-conversations, Livy finally seems to get through to Wylder. He seems to want nothing to do with her, and Livy just won’t tolerate that. When she meets strong, silent-type Wylder, Livy is immediately intrigued. She’s aware of her rebellion, but that doesn’t change the action. The story follows Livy, a college student who has the tendency to seek out the wrong kind of guy. ![]() ![]() I don’t feel great rating this as three stars, but parts of it warrant a lower rating while others are undeniably 5-star worthy. Disappointment that a book with so much potential ended up falling flat. Disappointment that the relationship never felt like more than sex. Disappointment that the ending is so incredibly problematic and rushed. I loved parts of it and hated others, but the lingering feeling is disappointment. This is one of those books where no rating seems like the correct one. ![]() ![]() But even a busy life can't keep him from being intrigued by the reappearance of Eli. The novel, when it first appeared, was a huge success, both with critics and readers it made Eliot's name as one of the greatest novelists in Britain, and her fame spread. Both are alike in their unhappy marriages, their social aspirations, and the way in which they react to societal pressure. ![]() ![]() Eliot then decided to build a world around these two characters, and create a more sweeping portrait of an entire town and its various inhabitants Lydgate and Dorothea acted essentially as the core of the novel, as two somewhat similar figures who were the soul of the novel. Eliot worked on several different stories, starting with Lydgate and his trials as a young doctor then she worked on Dorothea's story, writing the first ten chapters as they appear in the finished book with only this character and her world in mind. This was Eliot's most comprehensive and sweeping novel to date, and was intended as a study of provincial British life. ![]() Middlemarch was first published in 18, as a serial novel in eight parts, which came out every two months. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship―and both their lives―forever. That is possible, though it does seem extremely generous, even if by English we take 'coming from England' rather than 'written in the English language' and even if we use fairly narrow definition of 'the fantastic'. Neil Gaiman said, apparently, that Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last 70 years.
